Case Study

Rothschild is one of the world's largest independent financial advisory groups, employing 3,000 people in 42 countries around the world. Rothschild provides strategic, M&A, wealth management and fundraising advice and services to governments, companies and individuals worldwide.

In April 2011, Rothschild was looking for an Interim Project Manager to be involved with the major project which involved migrating parts of the London banking system over to the company's office in Zurich. Despite the size of the Rothschild Empire, the company didn't have an internal project management team with the right experience to manage the project and it was decided that an interim project management specialist was needed urgently. Rothschild approached award-winning, Interim Management provider Russam GMS to find a suitable candidate.

The company required an interim manager with relevant outsourcing and technology experience, who was able to speak the language fluently and who had a familiarity of the Swiss way of life.

Ben Prior, an experienced IT Consultant with a background in Outsourcing who had worked and lived in Switzerland for the past two and a half years turned out to be the ideal candidate.

Ben comments: "The whole recruitment process was very quick. I saw the position advertised on Russam GMS's website and was intrigued. I contacted Jason Atkinson, the company's Managing Director to find out more about the role on the Friday and by the Monday the interview with Rothschild was set up. I started at Rothschild's Zurich office the following week."

Ben was hired on a six month assignment to project manage and co-ordinate the team involved in the consolidation of the London and Zurich banks. The integration of the two banks was a major undertaking which required an experienced skill set to deal with the employment, business management, IT and legal complexities of the transfer which included issues involving banking licensing and compliance.

Ben also dealt with the HR issues ranging from handling the issues that arose from the London job losses to the recruitment needs of the Zurich bank. The most demanding part of Ben's assignment was the transfer of technology. The integration of the IT system involved moving data from one older system to another newer one. There was a vast amount of planning and many hours of work involved. As the transfer could only take place out of the banking hours, it meant Ben and his team were working late in to the night and over weekends. Ben also faced cultural differences between the UK and Swiss working practices. This required some careful negotiation and translation at times.

After the bank's migration was completed in October 2011, Rothschild were so impressed by Ben that they offered him a new permanent position as Head of Middle Office.

Ben comments: "Rothschild is a really interesting organisation to work for and I was thrilled to be offered a permanent position. Being involved in the integration of the two banks from the outset has given me a unique insight in the workings of the banks operation."

Costs & Fees

The cost of having an Interim Manager in your organisation should relate closely to the total cost of employing a permanent person, taking into account the employment on-costs and also the Interim Provider's margin.

The full cost of employment includes employment on-costs and paid absences (holidays, training and sick leave and employee benefits). Bear in mind that an Interim works in a highly focused way and that you will not pay for days when they are not actually working for you.

Agency fees for Interim Managers are usually included in the negotiated daily rates and these should always be transparent.
